Doug Seibold
President and Publisher,
Agate Publishing, Inc.
You’d be amazed at how many excellent cookbooks have been published right here in the Chicago area. And while Chicago may be known as a gastronomic hub, our city is not chopped liver when it comes to local culinary luminaries getting their savory works published. (Think Anupy Singla’s Indian cookbooks, Hot Doug’s story, and the Eli’s Cheesecake Cookbook.)
On hand to tell us about Chicago’s rich cookbook publishing niche is Doug Seibold, founder and president of Agate Publishing, Inc. Seibold will speak about how he decided to get involved in publishing cookbooks, his background in food-related media, and his 2006 decision to buy (and subsequently expand) Surrey Books, a Chicago-based cookbook publisher founded in the early 80s. Seibold established Agate’s Midway Books imprint in 2012, which focuses on Midwestern topics and authors with a particular focus on Chicago, and which also publishes cookbooks.
He’ll delve into such topics as how Agate works with Chicago cookbook authors; how publishers help authors develop their ideas; what’s involved in putting together a cookbook; what publishers look for in cookbook authors; and his take on the status of cookbook publishing market today.
And of course we’ll have a few delectable samples from his company’s books.
Biography: Doug Seibold has been a publishing professional in Chicago since 1986. For more than 15 years he worked as a freelance writer and editor for organizations that published magazines, books, and educational content. In 2003, he founded Agate, which is now a diversified independent publishing company with five distinct imprints. In 2005, he created Agate Development, an educational content provider for large education publishers, educational institutions, and other organizations. In 2006, Agate acquired Surrey Books, a 25-year-old Chicago-based book publisher, which is now run as an imprint of Agate. In 2012, Agate established a partnership with the Chicago Tribune to publish ebooks created from Tribune content under its Agate Digital imprint. In both 2012 and again 2016, Agate was identified by Publishers Weekly magazine as one of the fastest-growing small press in America.
