What gives soul food its soul? Join for sweet and savory talk on the history of soul food with Adrian Miller, author of the recently published Soul Food: The Surprising Story of an American Cuisine, One Plate at a Time. He describes his book as “a love letter to African American cooks.”
To research Soul Food Adrian visited 150 soul food restaurants in 35 cities (including Chicago) and 15 states. He will discuss various iconic foods (fried chicken, greens, black-eyed peas, and more), telling how each item got on the soul food plate, and explaining what the food item means for African American culture. He will also describe different versions of the recipes: traditional, health-conscious and contemporary. And of course we will sample some down-home favorites!
